How do you make a parent trust an AI with their kid?

How do you make a parent trust an AI with their kid?

That was the real problem. Designing a logo was the easy part. The hard part was making something a scared parent, up at 11pm, would actually trust with the most personal thing in their life: how they're raising their child.

For a lot of young parents, especially here in Bangalore, taking parenting advice from an AI is a hard sell. The whole category leans cold and clinical. Gradients, sans-serifs, machine-speak. That was the one thing this brand could never feel like.

My Read

An early-stage startup was building an AI parenting companion. They came to me with a name, ziji, a Tibetan word for the radiance that shows when someone stops pretending, and a product. There was no brand world around it yet. That part was mine to build.

I ran an analysis of the space, and two things became the brief for everything after.

every parenting and wellness app looks the same: rounded, pastel, gentle to the point of saying nothing. This product had more edge than that. It was honest, a little confrontational, built to tell parents the truth instead of patting them on the head. The brand needed to carry that same tone. Mature, editorial, real.

and harder, it had to feel human. So the core design problem became about designing the AI out of it, making a machine feel handmade enough to trust.

Directions 01 & 03, the meaning of the name

Directions 01 & 03, the meaning of the name

I explored two routes drawn straight from what ziji means: radiance. A sun rising over water, held inside a stamp. Warmer, more literal, easier to read at a glance as a mark. The wordmark followed the same logic, a warm serif that adds maturity and keeps it from ever reading like a kids' app or a chatbot.

Direction 02, the mind as a shape

Direction 02, the mind as a shape

This is the one I pushed hardest on, and the whole system grew out of it.

It started in a conversation. The founder, a clinical psychologist and art therapist, described the mind and a state of mind as something fluid. Cloud-like. A blob-like substance that shifts and moves and never holds one form for long. That image stuck with me.

So I built the mark from it. The dots above the i-j-i become soft, connected forms. It's a small icon that stands on its own, but it isn't fixed. It can morph, stretch, and animate to reflect different emotional states: calm, tension, release, overwhelm. One shape, many moods. A logo that moves the way a mind actually does, instead of sitting still and meaning one thing forever.

I drew it by hand on purpose. Every choice pulled toward the human: soft, imperfect, made by a person rather than generated by one. The craft was the strategy. A system designed to make an AI feel human enough to trust.

The strongest version of ziji was never a static logo. It was an identity that breathes. A mark that shifts with a person's emotional state, and a brand that feels less like software and more like something made by hand for a moment that actually matters.
